Second order from Dongfang;
first collaboration with Moventas

The Switch has signed a new agreement with Dongfang New Energy Equipment for a 3 MW drive train to be designed in collaboration with Finland-based Moventas, who will deliver the gear solution for the turbine. The aim is to optimize the entire package for Dongfang to sell to the Chinese market. The new order comes right after the successful startup of The Switch 1.5 MW direct-driven generators.

The Switch will team up with Moventas to design an optimized drive train and gear solution of internationally high standards for Dongfang to sell on the Chinese market. The Switch will deliver its medium-speed permanent magnet generator (PMG) and full-power converter (FPC) package, known as The Switch DriveTM. Moventas will provide the gear solution.

The two companies will collaborate closely on integrating the design so the speed and configuration work as an optimized package. The first prototype will be delivered to Dongfang in October 2010.

For Moventas, this agreement represents a huge opportunity in the Chinese market, while it marks a significant milestone in continued collaboration between Dongfang and The Switch.

“Dongfang has been especially satisfied with the positive experience from our first delivery of the direct-driven generator. The new order was placed only a month after the outer rotor permanent magnet generator (PMO) successfully passed testing,” says Juha Tuominen, Key Account Manager at The Switch for Dongfang. “They want to take advantage of The Switch PMG technology and be able to use The Switch converters also in new turbine models.”
